Master (Yoda) of your routines?

Do you remember the fresh feeling you had once you came back from the summer holidays? You know, when you felt like a superhero – with the power to conquer any bad habit and master your daily life?

I don't know about you, but I'd say (quoting ABBA) "it's slipping through my fingers". It is so damn easy to return to the old, not-so-ideal,?routines.

If you want to make sure your good intentions to improve your habits stick around and you don't slip back into those old routines, now is a perfect time to do something.

"Changing our routines is faaaar from easy. It requires a ton of energy and conscious effort. Our brains love saving energy, and especially when they have a lot to process, they prefer using the old and well-known patterns of behaviour that require hardly any conscious effort or willpower."

4 Ways to Manage Perfectionism at Your Organisation

In the last 30 years researchers have witnessed an increase in perfectionism. Thus, it is crucial for leaders to understand – and have tools to manage it.

1?? Help a perfectionist set realistic goals

It may be tempting to let them set the standards initially, as the short-term results might be outstanding.

However, in the long run, allowing the perfectionist to dictate the desired outcome can backfire, leading to chronic overwork and eventual burnout.

2?? Don't monitor the performance of a perfectionist too closely

...They will probably do it themselves!

Perfectionists are usually quick to see flaws and this tendency may be magnified if they think that they have to seek your approval to every little detail. Instead of micromanaging, foster an environment that bolsters confidence and self-trust.

3?? Create psychological safety by embracing mistakes

Take advantage of the timeless advice of leading by example: when a leader acknowledges their own knowledge gaps and openly communicates about their own mistakes, others will do the same.

4?? Accept perfectionism

Accepting perfectionism doesn't mean endorsing excessively high standards or self-criticism.

Instead, it involves addressing the root causes of the self-perpetuating cycle and reminding them that the way out is not to try harder but to try less.
