What’s posture got to do with it?
Perfect posture is different for each and every one of us as our bones are different lengths slightly different joint angles all causing differences to our posture which may or may not be visible to the onlooker
?But some postural habits are aggravated by modern life, from staring at computers all day, driving peering forward, slumped down on the sofa in front of the tv, jutting head as we text or type or tucked in chin as we stare at an phone or iPad in our lap.
?Now add in the weight of the head
?(if you think of a hot air balloon just inflated with all those guy ropes and stretched canvas as it’s tethered to the ground . that’s your head and spine with supporting muscles and tendons.)
?How much does the head weigh ? what is its force or load on the body?. Well that all depends on its position relative to the spine , which it is balanced on top of .
So in a neutral position approx 10lbs and in a head forward chin tucked position £60lbs. So it is no wonder that this impacts the bones , muscles , ligaments and tendons of the spine all the way up into the skull
?Back to superman ! That forward slumped position, Kyphotic, can have long term health implications as we age , For breathing, for digestion, for walking, For enjoying life, Difficulty of balancing , as well as balancing and looking up at the same time - so that Impacts going to the theatre or to see birds in the trees or to welcome family into your home
It also is said to increase the risk of osteoporosis . ?Now when you add in the risks of poor bone density post menopause then this postural position can add even more risk to an already potentially compromised structure .
