Perhaps you know that Marine Biologist, Ed Ricketts, was never a "Doc" except in the fiction of his buddy, John Steinbeck. Ricketts simply walked away from college and started BEING a marine biologist leaving the theoretical to the collegiate campus. Ed Ricketts had his life, and the sea, to examine here in the Monterey Bay town of Pacific Grove (P.G.) then at 800 Ocean View Avenue (now Cannery Row).

Ed Ricketts enthusiasm for the sea and it's inhabitants drug the likes of lower and upper echelons of early Monterey Society to roll up the sleeves and pant legs to help him collect specimens of ocean plant and animal life right here in these beautiful tide pools.

For Rickets, every day was another day in paradise, Between Pacific Tides. Ricketts wrote the academic/ecology front-runner, Between Pacific Tides, which is still a mainstay of all Oceanographic Biology students, while drinking his favorite beer and enjoying the company of the eclectic intellectuals of 1930- 1948 Monterey Bay.
