Economics Decoded
There is only one class that I flat-out failed in college. Or rather, since my college didn’t assign Fs, I got no credit. Anyhow, that class was Economics. It was my junior year, and I was an English major. I decided to sign up for Econ 110 because I thought it would be good for me—in the same way you decide to eat green beans because they’re good for you.?
I showed up to every lecture, but I often felt lost. I didn’t really understand how the concepts we discussed—things like elasticity and market efficiency—applied to my life. And when it came time to complete the final, I chose to write an essay about why economics didn’t make sense. Now let me be clear, writing an essay was not even an option for the final. This was an answer to a math problem.
Unsurprisingly, I received no credit.
Fast forward a few years and I was in grad school, studying journalism. I returned to economics, this time through the lens of business reporting. I began to understand that the very best stories have lots of drama, and most drama stems from one of two things: SEX or MONEY.? I realized that if I looked at economics as a foreign language, one I could learn and then use to tell a story, it started to make a whole lot more sense.
Today’s episode is for anyone who has ever felt intimidated by economics. My guest today is the economist and YouTube star, Kyla Scanlon . She’s going to help us fall in love with it.
Kyla Scanlon is an economist and the author of the new book: In This Economy? How Money and Markets Really Work. She started a financial education company, Bread, and you may have run across her informative and entertaining video lectures with titles like: “The New Economic Crisis is Home Insurance” and “ What’s wrong with the stock market.” She speaks, in particular, to a generation of 20-somethings who are trying to decode why society’s promises to their parents aren’t necessarily coming to fruition for them. But I’m just going to tell you: I’m nearly twice the age of her average viewer, and I’m hooked.?
