A KWHL Chart, also sometimes called a KWL Chart, stands for Know-What-How-Learn. It's a graphic organizer used mostly in education to help students with the learning process.
The chart is divided into four sections:
- K - Know: This section is where students brainstorm what they already know about a topic before they start learning about it.
- W - Want to Know: Here, students list down their questions or what they'd like to learn more about the topic.
- H - How (Optional): In some variations of the chart, this section is included for students to brainstorm ways to find the answers to their questions in the "Want to Know" section. This might involve finding resources, conducting experiments, or asking experts.
- L - Learn: After studying the topic, students fill this section with what they have learned. This helps solidify their understanding and identify any remaining gaps in knowledge.
KWHL charts are a great way for students to actively engage with new information and take ownership of their learning.
