FINALLY we can get together and be inspired by each other and our wonderful textile and material suppliers. Kvadrat held a private color workshop October 11, 2022, with the famed Italian Color Master Giulio Ridolfo, and taking the opportunity to showcase a preview of the fall launches of Steelcut Quartet and and updated palette for Steelcut 3 (these are our favorites!).
We were instructed to bring postcards to build a palette around, with the wonderful materials, florals, ribbons, spices, salts, leathers, beads, seeds provided by Kvadrat, and then have the master colorist, Giulio Ridolfo, discuss our creations. He was kind and offered guidance to many about the "Less can be more" mantra to many in the group...
Giulio talked about soaking in the colors, feelings and stories in landscapes while traveling, and then asked you to name your creation - which was harder than it sounds - the pressure was on. My postcard was a watercolor whale, with barnacles sprinkled about like notes of a song - so I thought of a name for the song of a whale, which I never did think of actually (suggestions welcome)... He liked the textural woven threads from the new Steelcut textiles that mirrored the barnacles, which added a level of depth to the scheme, this multi-colored thread was then further punctuated by applying small amounts of chromatic contrasting solid materials, indicating the light and shadows of light bouncing under the ocean water.

It was a treat to work alongside my colleagues and the magnificent Giulio Ridolfo, whom has influenced my projects time after time. It was an extraordinary experience. We left with a book, Materialising Color by Giulio, in a colorful bag lovingly made of the Steelcut material itself.
Many thanks to Sophie Cox and the DTLA team at Kvadrat for the lovely worksop and great experience. Hope to do it again soon!
