KubeCon NA 2024 Recap

KubeCon NA 2024 Recap

Hello everyone! I’m writing this on my trip back from Salt lake city, where KubeCon + CloudNativeCon took place. What an incredible event it was! While it’s hard to put my exact feelings into words, I’ll do my best to recap my learnings.

This KubeCon was organized around themes, with each day focusing on a specific topic: Day 1 was AI, Day 2 was Security, and Day 3 was Community.

For those unfamiliar, KubeCon is the largest cloud-native conference in the world, and the 2024 edition was held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Before KubeCon, there’s a two-day conference called Rejekts, which took place on the 10th and 11th this year. Rejekts is a smaller conference where you can have longer, in-depth conversations. I attended a few sessions, and Kubesimplify was proud to be a community and media partner for the event. I loved the overall vibe and had the chance to meet so many amazing people.

The 11th also marked the start of WasmCon, which ran for two days, the 11th and 12th. The 12th was also when KubeCon’s co-located events began. There are several co-located events that take place during KubeCon, adding even more value to the experience.

So, my schedule looked something like this: Rejekts > WasmCon > Platform Engineering Day > KubeCon.

My sessions

Whom I came along?

I came along with my wife, Saloni Narang, and my little daughter, Rushika. I cannot believe the level of patience our daughter showed throughout the event. For those who don’t know, KubeCon offers a free daycare facility for kids, which we’ve been using for the past three years! I’m so grateful that something like this exists, allowing us to bring our children along.

There were many games at KubeCon as well, and my little one especially enjoyed the LEGO building station. She played most of the games and spent a lot of time in the sponsor showcase, managing to collect a few plushies. Overall, we had a fantastic time together, and giving a session alongside your partner is truly one of the best experiences ever!

I encourage everyone to bring your kids, it’s completely normal, and you don’t have to miss them. Just bring them along!

Where I spent most of my time?

I’ve been part of this community for quite some time now, and I truly enjoy meeting new people and catching up with old friends. This KubeCon has been one of the best in a while, as I had long and meaningful conversations even during the event itself.

I got the opportunity to talk with incredible people in the industry, learn from their stories, and share what I’ve been working on. My time was divided between preparing for my sessions, delivering my talks, attending the keynotes every day (my daughter even joined me for the Day 2 keynotes!), and spending most of my time at the vCluster booth. At the booth, we shared the multi-tenancy story with the audience, and it was incredibly busy throughout the event!

My learnings from Kubecon NA 2024

I learned a lot, especially about the new projects that got open-sourced, like the GenAI workflow pipeline where people are integrating tools.

Kueue, the newly open-sourced 12-Factor app by Heroku, the CNCF’s fight against false patent trolls, containerd 2.0, the future of ingress controllers and sustainability, and multi-tenancy emerging as a key technology theme were some standout highlights.

What were your favourite learnings from the conference? #KubeCon
