Uber and Lyft got a temporary reprieve in their fight against unionization efforts in Seattle. A Seattle city ordinance allowing ride-hailing drivers to collectively bargain, the first such law in the US, has been put on hold while a suit from the US Chamber of Commerce is being decided. US District Judge Robert Lasnik says the hold isn’t a sign of how he will ultimately rule.
A tasty takeover: JAB Holding, which owns Peet's Coffee & Tea, Krispy Kreme, Keurig, and other brands, has agreed to buy Panera Bread for $7.5 billion. JAB says it’s maintaining the company’s current leadership, including founder/CEO Ron Shaich — which makes sense, given Panera’s success: “Panera's ascension as one of the most successful fast-casual chains shook up the restaurant industry,” explains USA TODAY. The bakery has about 2,000 stores and $5 billion in annual sales.
Amazon is refunding up to $70 million for in-app purchases made by kids. Amazon has agreed to settle a lawsuit over purchases made by children, says the FTC, who had accused the retailer of lacking proper safeguards. The agreement, the result of a long appeals battle, applies to purchases made without parental consent between November 2011 and May 2016.
Payless files for bankruptcy: In another retail blow, shoe chain Payless has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company will close roughly 400 stores in the US and Puerto Rico.
Mixed US data ahead of Friday’s jobs report: March US payrolls rose at the fastest pace since December 2014, ADP data showed, while LinkedIn’s Workforce Report found that US employers hired fewer people in March but year-over-year hiring remained strong. LinkedIn’s report, based on 133 million profiles, 20,000 company profiles, and 3 million monthly job postings, also found that the hottest cities for hiring last year were Seattle, Denver, and Austin — they gained the most workers in the past twelve months.
Kanye makes history: Kanye West's eighth studio album, The Life of Pablo, is the first record ever to go platinum from streaming alone. It’s been streamed over 3 billion times worldwide and 1.5 billion times in the US.
