Many a time, we feel happy and cheer for people scaling unprecedented heights of achievements and recognition for their innovations and contributions to society at large, impacting diff spheres of our lives. And it becomes even more special to know achievers from “Indian origin “and feel immensely proud, quite naturally. Meanwhile, what if achievers are from Indians inside India , our joy knows no bounds! We often have these discussions or debates at various levels and forums, like why “them” ,“Indian Origin “and “there” and why not “Indian”, “us” and “here” , specially and immediately after we hear the news of any award or recognition being conferred to people of “Indian Origin”.
Now it’s same with Livestock! Yes I am referring to native breed or Indian breed of livestock. It’s really heartening to know our very own Indian breed - Gir and Ongole behind the White or milk revolution in Brazil –some 14k km far from us. With natural sense of that proud feeling and also deepest sense of gratitude to fellow Indians and Brazilians involved to protection and conservation of this great breed, its also to ponder at the present status of these great breed in India.
Earlier during colonial raj, the “Go sampath” (cattle treasure or wealth) was the real economic indicator! It simply reflects living conditions or standards and prosperity of a village. It still is!
Livestock means life and stock to many of us, especially in rural areas either in Brazil or in India! Now just imagine if were to honor our Girs and Ongoles ? For their contribution and for a “category “ ?- Would it be for “impacts”, “Socio-economic contribution”, “environment” or “Life time achievement awards” ? Our lives are so revolved around these livestock that any awards would fall short of their importance and contribution to our livelihoods. The best way and may probably the only way to honor is, to protect, conserve and propagate these life contributors.
Jai Gomatha.
