Krieg & Fischer can also do CO2 liquefaction!

The latest project of Krieg & Fischer Ingenieure shows the installation of a CO2 liquefaction plant in combination with a biogas upgrading plant for two existing biogas plants of Bioerdgas Isenhagen GmbH.

The investor's goal is to transform its grid infrastructure into a sustainable energy system with sector coupling. The biogas upgrading plant will be renewed and includes the installation of a plant for upgrading biogas to biomethane and food-grade CO2 liquefaction. The biomethane produced will be injected into the local natural gas grid, while the captured CO2 will be liquefied and sold. The production of liquefied CO2 will be about 1.1 t/h, and it is also planned to produce Dry Ice. The integration of biogas upgrading and CO2 liquefaction will be carried out by Krieg & Fischer Ingenieure GmbH.

Exciting and more detailed information about the project can be read in the recently published issue of Bioenergy Insight magazine, in which an article by our project engineer Tobias Eckhof on this topic has now been published. Furthermore, the article rounds up these exciting insights into the project with separations and liquefaction of C02 and its application purpose.

The process of CO2 liquefaction is well established and already used in the brewing industry. However, in the biogas sector, liquefaction of CO2 is still relatively new. In biogas upgrading, CO2 is collected from the biogas, purified and liquefied. Depending on the technology used, the separated CO2 stream is already of high quality. Liquefaction can further increase the quality, and the methane in the CO2 stream can be recycled back to the upgrading plant to achieve near full methane recovery.

CO2 can be used in various sectors, such as food and beverage, agriculture, medicine, etc. Biogas plants are a source of biogenic CO2 that is contained in the natural carbon cycle and thus can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The focus of many biogas projects to date has been on the use of methane (see News) as the primary energy component. However, with the increasing use of biomethane from biogas, the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions produced during biogas upgrading can also be used effectively.
