Kraninger-era off to a good start

The Kraninger-era at the BCFP is off to a good start

I spoke to new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection Director Kathy Kraninger this week. She called to introduce herself, and I congratulated her on her Senate confirmation and how we’re eager to work with her.

This week the BCFP announced it will issue a proposal that follows CUNA’s recommendation to amend its policy on “no-action letters.” The proposal is expected to provide the additional clarity CUNA requested for the Bureau’s no-action letters that follow an application process and state it will not supervise a new product.

Starting in January, we’re breaking down consumer barriers and opening Americans’ eyes to credit unions. Find out how this research-driven, digital-first campaign is unlike anything our movement has done before, why it’s going to be so effective, and how you can be a part of it.

For the fifth year in a row, The Hill named me one of the top lobbyists in D.C.

It’s great to be named a top lobbyist—it’s yet another indicator that when we fight for credit unions on Capitol Hill, we’re effective. FCC takes CUNA-backed step to resolve TCPA issues

As recently as August, we were urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to create a reassigned numbers database that will enable callers to verify that they’re calling the right person—and not someone whose number has been reassigned—and creates a “safe harbor” so responsible callers are not penalized for a database error. This is a big step toward resolving liability issues around the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) for credit unions.

CUNA tells Treasury not-for-profit excise tax needs parity

We continue to push for parity with other organizations with a new 21% excise tax for not-for-profits, including credit unions, created by The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. We wrote to the Treasury Monday laying out our case that credit unions deserve the same consideration as for-profit organizations, and contracts in place before Nov. 2, 2017, should be grandfathered in.

Shout out to AACUL for a great conference

I enjoyed spending time with so many incredible leaders from the state Leagues at the American Association of Credit Union League’s winter conference. We covered a lot in a few short days, and it was a fitting cap to a tremendous year for our movement. We truly are stronger together.
