KPI-driven Systems Engineering
Thinking about Systems Engineering or more special Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE), there are different fields of application and ways to benefit. Some, I tried to summarize in MBSE in Practice.
Today I'd like to underline one additional, but very important point. At GPDIS I heard a brilliant statement:
You receive what you measure!
It is all about creating value! MBSE is one of the best means to affix Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to a product, its components and related processes. Not somewhere in a (separate) system, but as an integral part of the information backbone. Building semantic-rich models makes sense. For engineers it is becoming normal to affix test cases etc. to a system model. With the same perception, why not affixing KPI to the model and track what creates value! This brings really benefit to the company. Regarding this, MBSE could be used for truly integrating business, legal, engineering, technology etc. requirements - allover the product life cycle - and create value.
