- The photo shows a kodimaram which is meant for a temple. My 80 year old landlady told me how a kodimaram is selected. First the appointed members search for a suitable teak tree. Then the tree's grandmother's permission is asked so that the tree may be cut. Like our grandmothers, the trees' grandmothers love them deeply and so their permission is important. Then the next day, permission is asked of all the living beings residing on the tree and then the tree's permission is asked. Later it is cut with elaborate rituals and a promise that a sapling will be planted to recompense for the felled tree.
- If we had continued honouring such traditions, climate change disasters would not be occuring now . When we can give a thought to mute trees why can't we show a little compassion to fellow human beings?
