Kobe to Tokyo via Barcelona

Kobe to Tokyo via Barcelona

January 8, 1994.

I was 14 and Barcelona was my home town. As in, it was where my home was.

It was El Clásico and I was at Camp Nou with my family, and on the pitch were the greats of the time: Goals by Romario (hat trick), Koeman, and Iván, and FC Barcelona beat Real Madrid 5-0. They were joined in full by Zubizarreta, Ferrer, Guardiola, Sergi, Bakero, Goikoetxea, Stoichkov (Laudrup, 47’), Amor and Nadal. And of course Johan Cruyff, holding on steady to a chupa chups, said to be his weapon against tobacco.

An unforgettable night at Camp Nou, in the company of greats.

Cut to 2018.

I was a few years older and Kobe was my home town. As in, it was where my home was.

And I was on the move. I was relocating to Tokyo for a new job. Although my destination was just 520 km away, 160 minutes on the Shinkansen, I made a pretty astonishing detour.

On Tuesday morning July 17, I walked into Camp Nou. My first day with my new employer Rakuten.

An unforgettable day at Camp Nou, in the company of greats.
