Knowledge without Action, is actually Not Knowing
One of the most significant gaps in the world is the divide between knowledge and action. There are a lot of people in the world that know a lot of things, but do we apply what we know? Including myself, that is not always the case, that is a continual work in progress, and I am improving.
"[Let] your actions speak so loud, I can't hear what you say." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
It has only been a few weeks now since the end of the financial year here in Australia, and millions of Australians settle their financial debts, but how many of us settle our mental debts? You know, those things we have been putting off for a while now, back of our minds, consuming mental space. A wise entrepreneur asked me this question only a few weeks ago, which made me think. That is a good question, and I have not had this perspective on the end of the financial year before.
Bringing those two thoughts together, as I shared in the last article, I have been equipping myself with multiple cloud certifications, and empowering others to do the same. In the journey of acquiring new knowledge, I asked myself, what have I done with that new knowledge? Continually I see, especially in my current role in Cyber the uphill struggle it is to mount a strong defence which consumes my mental space where I know something needs to change.
What I have come to learn is time is the most precious commodity in life, and we have more important things to care about like time spent with family and gathering experiences.
"The most precious thing that we all have with us is time." - Steve Jobs
So applying what I know and understanding it may help you, I share with you Project Sweet Dreams. This project is to help empower you to build a more robust defence, and it does not matter if you are an ASX 100/Fortune 500 company, State or Local government or an SME. I hope it empowers you to buy some of your time back so that you can focus on more important things.
Safety cannot be a privilege only for those who can afford it, and this extends to the Cyber domain, as our world becomes increasingly digitised. You hear from industry experts, even governments now that it is better for everyone as a community to be a harder target.
Now I could have saved this project to myself but does that add value to more people. Think of it this way, if you and your best friend were going for a promotion which is limited to one spot, but you just happened to learn of some intel that will put you ahead, will you share that with your best friend? Or will you keep it to yourself to help you get ahead?
As I continually invest in developing my mindset, a book shared with me called The Go-Giver by Bob Burg, and John David Mann helped challenged my perspective on what it means to be a Go-Getter. Most people in the corporate world fall in that category, which did include me before, to what it means to be a Go-Giver.
"Successful people do this all the time. Typically, the more successful they are, the more willing they are to share their secrets with others" - The Go-Giver.
This sharing is about anyone can apply what you know. Clear your mental debt, which includes things that have been holding onto or in the back of your mind. The secret to success is giving.
Disclaimer: This project cannot defend you from every cyber threat, but it is a foundational piece that is inexpensive to run by leveraging native services and helps you automate some of the good cyber hygiene practices. But starting NOW, and starting SMALL is better than not starting at all.
