Knowledge vs Wisdom

Knowledge vs Wisdom

Story Time

I recently picked up an early morning intake and stocking job at a large retail store. At first, I was ashamed because I vowed to never work for anyone besides myself once I committed to this entrepreneurial journey. I try to never break promises because trust is big part of my brand. But now that I'm a father and a soon to be husband, I'll break every promise I have ever made before I let down my girls.

My first day was last week. I walked in the door at 3:55 a.m. and reported to my post. Immediately, I felt like a fish out of water. Carts and trucks whisking by as I struggled with my scanning device. I didn't sign it out properly so it was making an incredibly obnoxious sound--rookie move. I was embarrassed but I did my best to keep my composure.

One of the guys tapped me on the shoulder, "Hey man, this is a really fast paced environment so you got to watch your surroundings." I proceeded to the nearest corner, "My fault man, let me get out of your way."

After mustering up the courage to ask for help, I was able to get the device working properly and find my assigned trainer for the day. He showed me around a bit and then it was time to get to work. "Your on the truck today Darren. Tomorrow you'll learn how to work the line." I nodded, "Got it."

As I started unloading the truck, my nerves settled and my mental acuity returned. I started noticing products that I buy all the time and how they conveniently show up on the store shelves and in front of my apartment door. Light bulb moment.

The consumer experience is only the tip of the iceberg that is the retail machine. I was witnessing and now contributing to the 90% that happens below the surface, out of the sight of the customer. This is the reality of fancy words like logistics and operations management.

I realized that I'm not just here to earn a few extra dollars. I'm here to re-learn the lessons of physical labor and understand the reality of operations management at the highest level. Im here to convert knowledge into wisdom.

And what's more, I'm here to appreciate the people and processes responsible for our modern lifestyle of convenience and luxury.

Theme

There is no limit to your ability to reframe setbacks as opportunities.

Message

Do not be ashamed. Humble yourself before the task and do what you must. And even so, keep your eyes open for the opportunity to convert knowledge into wisdom.
