The Knowledge Of Transformer Radiation And Its Safe Distance

Is there radiation from the transformer?

Of course, there definitely is radiation from transformers. In addition to environmental noise, the transformer does generate electromagnetic radiation during operation. If this electromagnetic radiation exceeds the prescribed energy limit, electromagnetic radiation pollution will be formed. Electromagnetic radiation pollution can cause many hazards, among which the harm to the human body mainly include dysfunction of human autonomic nerves, blood pressure, blood phase disorders, and the damages to the eyes.

What is the harmful radiation range( safe distance ) of the transformer?

According to the relevant power facility protection regulations, for a 110 kV substation transmission overhead line, its protection area is 10 meters away from the line, in other words, as long as the distance from the wire 10 meters away, the safety of electromagnetic radiation is guaranteed. For 220 kV and 500 kV transmission and transformation system wires, the protection areas are 15 meters and 20 meters, respectively.

China's environmental standards for transmission and transformation electromagnetic fields are stricter than international standards. The power frequency electric field strength exposure limit issued by the international authoritative organization recommended by WHO to protect public health is 5 kV / m, and the power frequency magnetic field strength exposure limit is 0.1 Milli Tesla; while China’s power frequency electric strength exposure protection limit for the public is 4 kV / m and the magnetic field is 0.1 Milli Tesla. In actual construction, it is often lower than these standards.

The electromagnetic radiation of ordinary distribution transformers is not large, and the metal shell can shield a considerable part of the electromagnetic radiation. In general, the intensity of electromagnetic radiation is very small when it is more than 5 meters away from the transformer. If we only stay for a short time, the suitable insulation distance is enough for us.

As electronic products become more and more homely, electromagnetic radiation is no stranger to us. Sometimes the impact of the transformer electromagnetic radiation on the human body is not as great as the electromagnetic radiation generated by our home appliances. Understanding the damage to human body caused by transformer radiation could help us to better understand the workplace and environment in which we work, and could be also conducive to our own safety. Of course, in order to reduce or prevent electromagnetic radiation and protect ourselves,we need to start from the small things in daily life.
