Difference between an atmospheric distillation column and a vacuum distillation column

The main difference between an atmospheric distillation column and a vacuum distillation column lies in their operating pressure and purpose in the refining process.

Atmospheric Distillation Column

This column operates at or near atmospheric pressure. It is the first major unit in a refinery and is used to separate crude oil into its primary fractions based on boiling points, such as naphtha, kerosene, diesel, and heavy gas oils. The higher pressure allows for the separation of lighter fractions which have lower boiling points.

Vacuum Distillation Column

This column operates under reduced pressure, or vacuum, to lower the boiling points of the heavier fractions that remain after atmospheric distillation. By reducing the pressure, the column prevents thermal cracking of the heavy residues that would otherwise occur at the high temperatures needed under atmospheric conditions. This allows for the extraction of valuable products like vacuum gas oil and lubricating base oils.

Summary

In summary, atmospheric distillation is used for initial separation of crude oil under normal pressure, while vacuum distillation further processes the heavier fractions under reduced pressure to avoid thermal degradation and obtain additional valuable products.
