KNOWLEDGE HOARDING : THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT WE ARE ALL TEMPTED TO DEVOUR IN OUR PROFESSIONAL CAREERS

KNOWLEDGE HOARDING : THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT WE ARE ALL TEMPTED TO DEVOUR IN OUR PROFESSIONAL CAREERS

At a talent review meeting with the Top leadership team earlier in ?the day, our MD, while discussing a Hi-Po employee candidly ?remarked that she is very good at her work but is equally good at hoarding her expertise and not sharing it with others.

Back home, over a hot cup of espresso while carelessly watching visuals of a compelling sport event, my mind was in deep thought, ruminating over the candid averment ?of knowledge hoarding made by our head honcho.

Later during the evening, over a hot cuppa coffee, I reasoned that Know-how hoarding is so prevalent in organizations and can have ?a significant workplace issue that has the power to disrupt organizations. In my organizational experience, it stands out as a major obstacle to creating a collaborative culture, achieving group objectives, fostering effective teamwork, and establishing a learning environment.

Despite understanding its detrimental impact, why do professionals still engage in this behavior? The answer lies in the fact that hoarding knowledge is often fueled by ?a highly inherent trait in most of us - insecurity. Insecurity is an inevitable part of being human. Although life is insecure for every organism, humans alone are burdened by knowing that this is so. No feel good workshop or book can rid us of it as ?it is built on our sub-conscious belief and negative assimilation of our own life experiences

One of the key imperatives to an effective workplace culture is a knowledge sharing culture. HR must work with its people to show the symbiotic benefits of knowledge sharing over the stagnation impact of knowledge hoarding. For employees, teams, and organizations to be successful, having a culture of knowledge sharing is essential from the start. In fact, according to a Stanford study, companies that promote collaboration are 5 times as likely to be high performing. Knowledge sharing is the fuel for collaboration. When individuals hoard knowledge, the impact is wider than most realize.

Knowledge Hoarding should be declared as the "disease" in the organisation. And the people suffering from it should be "treated" invariably with sensitisation that sharing knowledge does not deplete their wealth of knowledge but instead adds to it!

Thankyou for bringing forth this essential topic. Knowledge sharing and the success of people development initiatives are influenced by both individual behavior and organizational culture. When organizations do not prioritize people development as a key objective/ KPI for managers, it hinders the effectiveness of all people development programs such as mentoring, coaching, sponsorships, and shadowing. By fostering a culture that values openness and collaboration, organizations can significantly enhance the impact of these initiatives, leading to more successful outcomes. Prioritizing people development as a business objective encourages knowledge sharing and creates a supportive environment for growth.
