Knowledge is not enough

Knowledge is not enough to achieve Process Excellence

Process excellence is not universal. Why?

Every organisation will have its own reason ( for not achieving it, or rather striving for it) - there is no shortage of reasons. As with any complex situation, there are a number of reasons… one or many may be applicable in any particular organisation. Top of the list are management commitment and knowledge ( about how to go for it).

The knowledge part can come from outside the organisation.There are many consultants willing to help. The top management support however has to come from inside. And there are degrees in which it can be available. Here too, limited support does not work. It has to be 100%. 100% at 100% times, 100% places. In all dimensions. Also, this responsibility can  be not delegated and  this is  where there are many failures.

Thus what is required is

  • passion from top management.
  • Passion is not something concentrated at some location. It has to be as widespread as possible.
  • Passion can be spread, it can be infectious.
  • Hence, in support to the top management,( not in place of) this can be partially done by the consultant also.
  • Top management and consultant working in tandem can achieve great results.

one reason/ condition i could have added - the responsibility for process excellence cannot be delegated by the top management. Delegation can be one of the reasons why it does not happen!

IMHO the prevailing culture reinforced with attitude to acquire & apply the knowledge in the right perspective is more important. Zeal to achieve something can not be influenced by the top management, raising own bar of process excellence is one of the accountabilities of process owners. Learning is sole responsibility of individuals and not the top management. Learning & its application must be a continuous journey of individuals.

Commitment is a mental quality mostly born enhanced by training. The urge to excell is also like that. Very good explanation!!
