Knowledge capture and retention in FEA
Knowledge and experience can leak out of a company’s collective “soul”
Many companies are concerned with retaining the knowledge and experience that analysts possess and which is inherent in both their day-to-day and long-term tasks. This is not a new phenomenon – I remember very similar worries when I joined the aircraft industry 40 years ago. The concern then was associated with the transition from traditional manual stressing techniques to the new-fangled FEA methodologies!

7 年After spending close to 35 years with Finite Element Methods, I tend to agree. If you do not know what answers to expect from your FEA system, the results can be ruining your design. We present short courses in Structural dynamics, to let the designer understand what he or she is doing before diving into FEA. The courses will let the participants understand that there is no big fuzz about understanding the dynamics theory. But how do you apply that knowledge in your design, that is often the biggest challenge?

7 年Fantastic article Tony Abbey. This is a real challenge for all companies and as an individual I have tried to capture my knowledge and experience in the form of engineering tools that my junior engineers utilise for their day to day work. The knowledge is captured in engineering reports that both serve as a user guide and contain the theory so that it can be easily validated and verified. My utopian ideal is to have an engineering toolbox available for all our engineers. It takes time to do and a balance on delivering services versus investing the time to secure the knowledge can be tenuous at best. It generally happens by osmosis rather than a deliberate defined strategy.

7 年Manual stressing tech is far better than FEA most of the time. This is my observation after completing 44 years in design, manufacture, certification, ground and flight testing of aircraft and helicopters. After all Boeing 747 was made in 1962 with hand calculation. No FEA.
