Knowing your cost of production

Benjamin Franklin is credited with the quote "a penny saved is a penny earned". That quote has as much meaning today as it did back in the 1700'S. It has as much meaning for Printers today as it does for the corporate businessman. Knowing what they are doing is important to both. Even the Cheshire cat said to Alice in "Alice in Wonderland", "if you don't know where you're going, then it doesn't matter which way you go".

This all leads to the importance of Printers knowing their cost of production for evaluating the success of their print operation. It is surprising to me how many Printers are truly not aware of the actual costs of producing a job. Many times actual costs are not taken into account. Some owners even ignore personal expenses if they do the work themselves! This will lead to disaster very quickly, especially in these tough economic times.

Knowing the cost of production allows a Printer to do a better job of estimating products by understanding where their breakeven selling price really is.
