“The doorstep to the temple of wisdom is a knowledge of our own ignorance.”?- Benjamin Franklin
One of the most common concerns that I hear from clients and patients is how to know the right thing to do in any situation.?You have no doubt heard some version of this yourself,?from coworkers, clients, patients, your children, or close friends. ?
In modern society, there is no shortage of input, both from well-meaning and not so well-meaning people, giving us constant advice. Social media is filled with them:?
“Ten Best Tips on How to Have a Great Marriage”
“Top Five Strategies to Get More Clients”
“How to Improve Your Sales in 30 Days”
“Start a Home Business and Make $1,000,000 in 6 months”
And on and on….
The taller the claim, the more unlikely the outcome.?
While some of these “tips” may be well-meaning, the reality is, what works for the author of these tips, does not work for everyone.?There is no such thing as a “one size fits all” in making important decisions in your life; whether it is your relationships, self development, business, or finances. There are simply too many variables to apply exact formulas that suit YOUR circumstances. You may gain some useful information, but to follow it exactly is a recipe for deep disappointment.?
How can you KNOW the right decision in any given circumstance???
The best starting place is realizing the limitations of your personal mind.?
Individual intellect is very limited.?Some have a keener intellect than others,?but no matter how clever one is, one cannot know everything. Realizing THAT is key to accepting direction outside of your own thoughts. ?The human mind (brain) is a collection of past stored experiences and associations, such that when stimuli of any kind,?trigger the brain to recall information about what to do in any situation, memory gives us a quick answer.?The problem is, the answer is based on past knowledge, and may not be the right answer.
Then what? What if there is no past correlation with what you are currently facing?
Awakening to the idea of accessing a larger intelligence than your own intellect, allows you the possibility to connect to that knowledge. ?

If you are using your brain to figure out a solution to a problem that you have not been able to solve on your own, you are not likely to solve it by thinking more about it.?
For solutions to practical day to day problems (where is the best place locally to buy groceries, who is a good dentist in my area, etc), networking with people you know and trust for recommendations can help. This does not mean that you blindly follow their direction. However, gathering information allows you to access the data and choose what fits for you personally, given your unique circumstances. These are solutions to simpler problems.?
What about bigger problems in life, like choosing a life partner, a career, starting a new business? ?
You can still data gather to obtain information,?but before making a decision on what to DO, set aside time to do nothing but quiet your mind and reflect on what you have learned so far. Take a walk, meditate, listen to soothing music… anything that usually quiets your mind.?When you are still and not engaging your brain, Universal Intelligence that exists in every living thing (including YOU) can be felt and heard.? These are the “aha” moments you have no doubt had in your life already. ?
If you feel calm and peaceful about a decision, even if you cannot see how you can accomplish it, it will be the correct decision for you at that moment.?Sometimes this means being led into a situation that needs to teach you something, that you would not have chosen with your intellect alone; sometimes causing you some pain.?But, on the other side of that pain, a whole new life can emerge; a better life than the one you are currently living.?The Universe knows how to lead you if you listen for its direction.
If you are feeling anxious and unsettled about a decision, it is usually not the right thing to do.?Feelings are a great barometer of thought… even if you are not aware of what those thoughts are.?
When you leverage your innate Universal Intelligence (spirit, God, or whatever word you use to name it) to guide you in your decision making, you can KNOW with certainty, what the right thing is to do for you at any given moment.
I do not have that answer for you and neither does anyone else.?
As a coach, my role is to help you to understand who you really are, your intrinsic innate worth, and your power… the power you have within at any moment. The power of now.?This power within you, will guide you in every decision that you need to make. No coach or teacher can tell you what is right for YOU. The proper role of a coach or spiritual guide is to teach you how to access your own power. When you partner with Universal Intelligence within you, instead of relying solely on the power of your individual intellect, your life will change dramatically.?
Wait for the feeling of peace and calm when making important decisions (and they are all important).?Even if things do not turn out as you thought they might, when decisions are made after weighing the facts and reflecting on right action, a knowing without words, a “still small voice”, will be felt. Then you will KNOW what to do. ?
