Know Your Worth: A Lawyer’s Anthem
After meeting with well over 500 different lawyers in 2024 and doing dozens of meetings already this year, I have noticed a trend in the attitudes and mentality of lawyers across generations, PAE and areas of law.
Employed lawyers are completely unaware of the immense power they hold over the firms who employ them. From the hundreds of examples I have heard and in my own personal experience this is due to them accepting the misleading half-truths told to them by the partners and those at the top of the firm's traditional, and in my opinion pyramid-like structure.
"You're not ready."
"Take what you're given."
"Be grateful you still have a job."
"Back in my day we worked twice as long as you did today."...
.....to a lawyer who had put in a 14hour day so the math's doesn't even stack up.
The profits flow to just a handful of individuals at the top of the pyramid but the billable hours, workload and bulk of the revenue (value) is being produced by the majority of lawyers who sit below the pointy end of the pyramid.
Digressing to a new topic.
I played violin as a child (very poorly) but never worked hard enough to build the skill to create music.
My lack of musical talents aside, I have always had a knack for writing song lyrics and recently I discovered there are AI's that allow you to upload your own written lyrics, nominate the genre, and produce professional-sounding songs to bring the words I have written to life.
For me, music has a way of speaking to us in ways words alone can’t.
That’s why I encourage you to read this article to head over to hear the song in your favourite style before you finish reading.
Over my few week's Christmas break and while writing down my professional goals I want to achieve in 2025, I was inspired to write a song for all the lawyers who feel they are not being valued for their tireless efforts.
To preface the lyrics and before or after you listen to the song (in your favourite genre), I thought this article could provide a more in depth explanation of the lyrics and where I could put my goals for my followers to hold me accountable to.
Goal 1
Help as many solicitors escape the tyranny of employed life and become self employed and build a sustainable client base for themselves.
Goal 2 - For those who simply can't risk not having a steady wage.
Help as many solicitors or prospective solicitors to get themselves a salary increase above CPI and ideally more than 10% of whatever they are on right now.
Breaking Down the Lyrics
“Late nights, stacks of files, coffee stains on your desk...” Sound familiar?
For many lawyers, especially those just starting out, these lyrics were written to capture the all-too-familiar grind: chasing the dream of partnership, battling burnout, and feeling undervalued.
These words aren't just poetic—they're a mirror reflecting the struggles of countless professionals in the legal field.

The Message Behind the Song
This isn’t just a song—it’s a rallying cry.
The lyrics urge you to reflect on why we started our journey in law and whether the path we’re on aligns with our goals.
More importantly, it challenges you to step up and demand more: better pay, fair treatment, and a work-life balance that aligns with your values.
Why This Matters
Whether you’re a junior lawyer chasing your first big win or a seasoned professional questioning the traditional career ladder, the message is clear: you are worth it.
Your skills, hard work, and dedication deserve respect and reward.
The most effective tool in your arsenal? Negotiation.
The truth is, no one else will advocate for your worth if you don’t.
The legal profession may be demanding, but you have the power to demand more in return.

Final Thought
You’ve worked too hard and sacrificed too much to settle for less than you deserve.
The best way to make the sacrifices worth it is to demand what you’re worth—and to never stop believing that you’re worth it.
You’ve got this. ??
