As a recruiter I talk to a lot of people who are either a) looking for a new job b) in an existing role however open to taking the call and c) who initially say that they are happy in their role and not looking however, there always seems to be a common denominator once I have asked this:
Are you getting the recognition you believe you deserve? Even asking this question it's as if I am from an entirely different planet. Seemingly confident professionals are disoriented by the question. So I ask it in another way. When was the last time you got recognized for something? All too often I hear about being recognized for things that went wrong NOT about the small and yet very important successes. In fact once unpacked those in category c (above) open up and start being authentic. In all three scenarios I can tell you that as a recruiter it's very important that you can share in quantifiable ways some data points around what you have done.
So I ask this of you, because I have asked it of myself. What are you doing? Are you being recognized? Does your culture support your development in a way that is meaningful for you?
Once I started asking these questions I realized that I was accountable to myself so I started taking stock of my daily positives and then on a weekly basis I would review and then on a monthly basis I would take the list to my Manager/Supervisor proactively. I am not saying that this approach was always warmly received with gold stars however when it came time to me looking around for a new job/role I could be honest with myself and those that were trying to recruit me on whether I was growing and shaping my career.
Try it and come back to me. If you are already doing something similar please share. Thank you!
