Know Your Supply Chain: Navigating a New Era of Business Resilience

In our ever-evolving and interconnected world, businesses are facing a new imperative: understanding the intricacies of their supply chain like never before. In the past, it may have been sufficient to have a clear picture of immediate suppliers and stakeholders. However, in today's business landscape, a broader perspective is not just advisable; it's essential.

In this article, I explore the significance of understanding the supply chain from both the business, as well as the regulatory perspective.

The Business Perspective

A successful business today understands that the supply chain is not a linear structure but a complex ecosystem with multiple layers. It is not enough to merely vet immediate suppliers; we must also inquire about their suppliers and so on. This cascading network of suppliers can have a significant impact on operations, finances, and reputation. For instance, if a key supplier experiences disruptions due to unforeseen challenges, it could potentially ripple into the business, causing production delays, cost overruns, or even reputational damage.

On the other hand, knowing customers' clientele can provide critical insights into their financial health. If direct customers are grappling with financial issues that hinder their ability to settle invoices, revenues could be indirectly impacted. Thus, understanding the health and challenges of customers' clientele is essential to anticipate potential cash flow challenges in the business.

This 360-degree approach to supply chain due diligence is now paramount for informed decision-making and safeguarding operations.

The Changing Regulatory Landscape

In addition to the business imperative, there is a shifting regulatory landscape that further underscores the need for comprehensive supply chain due diligence. The European Union (EU) has recently taken a significant step in this direction with the introduction of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDD) in February 2022. This directive, initially proposed by the European Commission, gained momentum in the European Parliament and was approved as the European Supply Chain Act by June 1, 2023.

The European Supply Chain Act is poised to be a game-changer for businesses operating within the EU or having significant connections to it. The law extends its reach beyond direct suppliers and encompasses the entire value chain. This means that companies will be obligated to manage social and environmental impacts not only within their operations but also across their supply chain, including indirect suppliers.

Why the Changing Regulatory Landscape Matters for Businesses

The European Supply Chain Act isn’t merely an EU-centric directive and shouldn’t be viewed as a burden. The heart of the European Supply Chain Act is a commitment to human rights and environmental sustainability. Companies will be required to identify, address, and report on potential negative impacts on human rights and the environment throughout their supply chain.

Embracing these changes can lead to tangible benefits for businesses. Those who prioritise sustainability and responsible practices stand to gain reputation and customer trust. Sustainable growth becomes a real possibility for the business world.

Conclusion

As businesses, we must recognise that the world of supply chain due diligence is evolving rapidly. The days of only looking at immediate suppliers are behind us. Today, we need a 360-degree view of our operational landscape. This means understanding not only our suppliers but also our suppliers' suppliers and keeping a close watch on customers and their financial health.

Moreover, the regulatory landscape is shifting towards greater transparency and accountability. The European Supply Chain Act is a clear indication of this trend, and it has implications beyond the EU's borders.

In conclusion, as we navigate these transformative times, businesses that embrace comprehensive supply chain due diligence stand to thrive in an environment where sustainability, responsibility, and transparency are the keys to success. At Cedar Rose, we are committed to supporting businesses in this journey, helping them navigate the changing landscape of supply chain due diligence and harnessing its potential for sustainable growth and success.

It's an ever changing world.Businesses that don't adopt a strict and visionary due diligence policy, or subcontract this role to a 3rd party like Cedar Rose due to their lack of competent personnel or database, will take the hit at some point that's for sure!
