KNOW YOUR POWER

We all have a way of seeing the world and ourselves. Think about yourself for a moment... what words would you use to describe you? Choose at least five and jot them down. I’ll wait...
Now for the big reveal: this short list is more important than any other list you’ve written today, perhaps even this month or year. Whether these five words are an accurate reflection of who you are, or a wild distortion of reality: they are your reality, and thus, they hold within them an immense power to alter the trajectory of your entire life.?
For example, if you think of yourself as robust and strong - you’ll act that way when tough times hit (and become even more robust and strong in the process). Alternatively, if you think of yourself as fragile and inflexible, when those same tough times hit, they will break you (and prove yourself right in the process).
Of course, this doesn’t mean that we can just think or believe our way to great success, but who we believe ourselves to be, holds much more power than we tend to acknowledge.
With this in mind, I wonder how many of us would write ‘powerful’ as a word to describe ourselves. While this might sound like something only a crazed ego-maniac would admit to, it’s true of each one of us. The problem is, so few of us know the power we hold – over our own lives and state of mind particularly.
What are the words that immediately came to your mind?
Having recently stepped into a new role, I’ve wanted to bring the best I have to offer to this incredible team. And in order to do that, I’ve had to take a good, hard look at who I am and what I really have to offer...
I am a natural-born connector. I have always loved building bridges. Here at The Brand Power Company SA, I now get to connect our clients to our company, thousands of people to the best brands, and each member of our amazing communities to one another and to their greater potential.
I’m great at delegating. I want to play to my strengths and leverage who I am for the good of others. This means not being defensive or overly-protective about handing over the rest.
I am a custodian. Now, I can be one here - stewarding the collective power and insights we have as a team, and using them to empower more people and partners. I think that’s what excites me the most about my new role: that knowing one’s power can be contagious and catalytic.
By stepping into who we are, and being clear about who we are not, we give others permission to do the same.
To me, that’s real power.
