Know Your Nation: Strive for your Freedom from Ignorance

Someone recently argumentatively asked me why she needed to know about Indian history at all, and what relevance it had to her daily life. While that may have been one explicit case, I am sure many people might have such an approach.
A question I would patiently address, but something that has so many layers of problems in perception. A brief answer on why I think it is needed.
Firstly. Knowledge, Irrespective of what it is for, is never harmful. You may not use it in your daily work but it does drive you in ways you cannot imagine. Every political, economic, socio-cultural forces around us has its explanation in some chapter of your history. Having a myopic utilitarian approach to knowledge based upon selectivity of your perceived usage is anything but knowledge seeking. I would call it more of mechanical information absorption for your activity.
Second. History is more than a dictionary of events and dates. History gives one a whole picture of global dynamics, forces of power, people and politics. Past is a shadow of the present that has the potential to explain our future!
Third. Why do we need to know the Indian independence history? Well. Apart from the duty and obligation that one has as an inheritor of the independence for which people sacrificed their lives, lands and luxuries, it is the better understanding of the present that we may have and make better decisions only if we are informed of the roots of present dynamics. Today, everyone holds an opinion with a high degree of passion. But any emotion howsoever strong is misplaced if it comes out of an uninformed mind.
Do this for your country: Know your country! Each day, a little more. And be an informed Indian. Because knowledge changes your views. Your views make your judgments. And your opinions do matter for the nation, shape the daily events and to realise the dreams that were once seen for the country that we had inherited this day.
We have inherited political freedom without incurring a personal cost. Now we are ordained to cultivate our intellectual freedom. Knowledge is freedom from ignorance is slavery.
And it is often important to know where you come from to know better where you should head to!
Jai Hind!
