Know Your Focus Points

Know Your Focus Points

This week I ran a process with my clients in my coaching program around getting really clear on the key focus points that they need to work on in the next 4 to 6 weeks to really make the biggest difference.

My coaching framework is built around three core pillars being –

Attract - meaning business development, winning work and attracting new clients.

Perform - being the performance of your team, the performance of yourself as a leader and developing amazing key client relationships.

Grow - meaning focusing on the activities that will grow your team, grow your business and elevate yourself into a truly strategic leadership role.

So 3 x 3 works out to be nine core areas that are key focus points for helping my clients win in these core pillars of Attract, Perform & Grow.

The activity that I ran with my clients this week was looking at these nine core areas and scoring themselves honestly out of 10 as to how they’re going in these nine areas.

A score of 0 to 4 means they are doing terrible in this area and it needs work and focus. A score of 5 to 7 means they’re going okay but still definitely needs work. And a score of 8 to 10 means it’s going well and probably doesn’t need to be a focus over the next 4 to 6 weeks.

So as I said, there are nine core areas that I help my clients focus on in order to help my clients win and help them get results.

But the reality is that not everyone needs to focus on all nine areas straight away. In some of these areas my clients are doing really well and as part of the process we ran this week, they scored themselves 7 or 8 out of 10, meaning they don’t really need to work on these areas, they are going well and they’re not a focus point.

What we found running this exercise, is that most of my clients had three or four areas out of the nine areas that needed work.

Now this exercise wasn’t about beating my clients up or them getting frustrated or annoyed that they scored low in these areas. It was an opportunity for them to grow. It was an opportunity for them to get excited about the areas they were doing well in and also for them to know that there were only 3 to 4 areas that they needed to focus on to make the biggest impact in their team and in their business.

So this exercise gave my clients incredible clarity on the three or four areas that they needed to focus on. They could then set actions coming out of our coaching session around these areas that needed work and they knew that if they took action in these areas, this would make the biggest difference for their team and their business.

So the key takeaway here is that you don’t need to be taking action in all areas of your team or your business right away and right now. You just need to know the right areas to focus on that are going to make the biggest difference and take action in those areas first.
