Know Your Core Values
Recently, a person I know had to make a tough decision on whether to continue working for an organization that doesn’t have value alignment with their personal values. The organization provides a lucrative compensation package and is ethical in its practices; it simply operates a different business model than the one this person previously?participated in.
At one time or another, we all face the question of values, whether at work, home, or even in relationships. When do we compromise who we are for monetary reasons, comfort, stability, or a sense of loyalty? Should I move on? Does this situation fall into a ‘grey’ area? Am I making a concession? Ultimately, is this still within the realm of what would be acceptable, and can I live with myself?
There is nothing wrong with valuing money, work ethics, or a code of conduct. What matters is what’s important to you. Someone shared in a group setting a terrific saying: “We’re watching your actions, not your mouth.” The choices we make, the actions we take, and the things we’re drawn to reflect our values.
I won’t disclose the individual's choice regarding staying or leaving; it’s irrelevant other than whether they did some self-reflection, listened to themselves, and followed their values.?
Prior to being faced with tough decisions, it behooves us to determine our core values, priorities, non-negotiables, and mantras or principles. This will make it easier to choose which direction to take at many of life’s forks in the road.
