Know your 'bots? #2 Easter ??
Happy Easter everyone! ?? I hope you are all having peaceful holidays with your dear ones. To spice up Easter a bit, I am bringing you some cool fun facts about robots again. ??
This time, I aimed to connect the fun fact to Easter. Easter is the most important Christian holiday as it commemorates the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, on his third day after his crucifixion. The question that you saw this week was: "When was the first industrial robot born?" and I hope you can see the light analogy of new "life" that I had in mind. ??
The correct answer
Without further delay, the correct answer is in the 1950s. The first patented industrial robot is called Unimate and it was invented by George Devol in the United States in 1954. Devol, together with his companion Joseph Engelberger started the first robot manufacturing company called - guess the name... Unimation. ?? The patent for Unimate was granted to them in 1961 and the robot worked at a revolutionary General Motors assembly line. Until today, Devol is named the "Granfather of Robotics".
This is what Unimate looked like. Not too different from robots today, eh?
And here is a British commercial stating some of Unimate's functions.
That's it for today, I hope you learned something new because I did! Prepare for a new cool fun fact in two weeks. ??
