What happened to the manager when a bully is in the office?

Many times managers have to deal with being yelled at by their staff. When you are being yelled at how do you handle it? What is your first reaction with the employee?

Do you write them up? Go to your Manager? Do you just shut up and just let the employee abuse you? Do you fire the employee? Do you calmly sit the employee down in hopes that you can resolve their fear.

If you picked the last one your employee then mocks you to other employees and patients. Yelling it with in the clinic or business area that you are afraid of them.

Turning your staff against you. How do you handle a bully in your office? How do you make the bully stop if you have no authority to fire and can not write them up with out your upper manager approval? Is the damage all ready done and you as a manager should you just look for a new job?
