In the Know: Spring into new Skills with the Now You’re Talking Network
Now You're Talking Network
Connecting female millennials globally to opportunities & resources so that they earn more and are more confident
Good morning, Maya Ophelia here ?? ! Welcome to our April newsletter!
As the flowers bloom and the days get longer, this season marks a time of renewal and opportunity, and we're excited to share inspiring stories, valuable resources, and exciting updates tailored to support your aspirations and endeavours. Let's embrace the energy of spring as we celebrate the achievements of our community and pave the way for even greater success ahead.
I've been reflecting on my career journey recently and wanted to share some insights with you. I started as an apprentice ten years ago and now, I'm a board member. With one uncompleted degree, two career pivots and a redundancy sprinkled in, it hasn't been a 'traditional' route.?
But through it all, I've gained confidence, life experience, and, most importantly, an understanding of my skills. I know what works for me, and thanks to several struggles, I know what doesn't.
We usually only think about our skills when looking for a new job or updating our LinkedIn profile, but identifying your strengths (and weaknesses) is key to finding the right path for you.?
Instead of overcomplicating it, start by answering these three questions:?
One of the best pieces of advice I received was from a manager in my first job. She told me to document everything significant or interesting I did at work and I didn't know how helpful that would be throughout my career. It's made updating my CV much easier, and it's a nice reminder of how my skills have developed over time. If you're not already doing this, start now!
Because work-life balance is essential, focus on your skills outside the workplace too - the ones that contribute to your joy. Maybe you enjoy painting, supporting a community like ours, or ?have almost reached a 365-day streak on Duolingo. Whatever it is, you're developing your skills daily without actively realising it and enriching your life in the process.
It's important to remember that we are fluid.?
What served us in the past might not serve us anymore, even if it's something we're highly skilled at. Our interests evolve and adapt to the world around us as we do, so give yourself grace and don't be afraid to try new things or change directions. You're on the right track!
The rest of the newsletter is packed with a recap of our Women’s History Month Women in Tech Showcase, our upcoming Women on Boards event as well as the usual reads, listens and member updates. Enjoy!
