CHECK FOR RESPONSE
Once scene safety is confirmed, check the response of the victim.
Kneel down next to the victim. Tap the shoulder gently and shout loudly – “ARE YOU OK?”
If they do not respond, call for help immediately.
Lack of blood supply to the brain during the cardiac arrest (a condition when the heart stops beating) may lead to lack of responsiveness. This needs to be recognised early. Identification of lack of responsiveness is vital in activating the Emergency Response System or “Calling For Help”.
Lack of responsiveness does not always mean that the victim has cardiac arrest. But it needs immediate attention to go through the subsequent step of seeking help. Assuming the existence of worst possible scenario of cardiac arrest and doing CPR is always recommended.
Remember, every second counts. Do not wait to go through the next steps quickly.
