In the Know: Is investing in yourself at the top of your to-do list?
Now You're Talking Network
Connecting female millennials globally to opportunities & resources so that they earn more and are more confident
Good evening,?Mary ?speaking here! Welcome to our March newsletter.?I hope you have had a lovely weekend. I’m suffering from what feels like jet lag from the clocks going forward this weekend!!
March is an important and busy month for us here at the?Now You’re Talking Network . This Women’s history month we have been running several International women’s day workshops and events and driving forward this year’s theme ‘Embracing Equity’.
I wanted to start this newsletter edition talking about the importance of continually investing in yourself.
It is not only close to the end of Women’s history month but also the tax year in the UK. I always laugh to myself seeing companies and individuals scramble around the end of tax year hype. My inbox is full of ‘how to maximise your ISA allowance this tax year’ and I get messages from people scurrying around to sort this out.?
Why do we leave important things like this to the last minute?
Investing in yourself financially is important but how often are you investing in yourself generally? Here are some ways I invest in myself all year round:
The truth is investing in yourself should be a continual habit in ways that serve you and aren’t necessarily ‘instagrammable’.?As we enter into the second quarter on the year, how will you commit to investing in yourself? I would love to know so please don’t hesitate to hit reply!
The rest of the newsletter is packed with a recap of our latest events as well as usual resources, opportunities and member updates. Enjoy!
Welcome to our new team members???
We have been growing our team at the Now You’re Talking network and would like you to meet Esme H. and Oriade Joycelyn Adenuga . Feel free to reach out to them and say hi. Hi all! ?? I’m?Oriade , a copywriter by day and an events planner…well, later on in the day! I am generally a lover of all things, creative, community and inspirational. Which is what has led me to the incredible NYT Network.
Why did you want to join the NYT network team?
There is something freeing about being around like-minded women that are keen on bettering themselves, all within a friendly space. NYT offers that and I decided I no longer wanted to just be an attendee, but actually contribute to what is a great network and an amazing community of women.
What is your biggest wish for young women?
My biggest wish for young women would be for them to realise that they are all game changers in their own right. They are capable of anything they put their minds to, as cliche as it sounds. I would also want them to understand the importance of sisterhood and community. Fixing another woman’s crown, never takes away from yours!
Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I have been scuba diving in Tenerife and Greece and one day hope to scuba dive around the world.
Hi all! ?? I’m?Esme , Originally from Devon, I moved to London last year to begin my undergraduate degree in International Social and Public Policy at the LSE. When I'm not in the library, I enjoy playing netball with my university team, doing yoga or being a complete tourist around beautiful London. Although I'm not sure what life after university will look like, I am considering consulting and working in educational policy.
Why did you want to join the NYT network team?
After attending a talk on 'how to network' by Mary, I immediately identified with the objectives of the network and asked how I could get involved further. I had already realised a huge gap in networking skills between myself and others at the start of university and felt compelled to get involved to work towards bridging it.
What is your biggest wish for young women?
Especially for young women at the beginning of their careers, I hope we can be confident enough to stand up for ourselves and our ideas, even in rooms full of intimidating, more qualified people. I wish every young woman could be given the skills needed to articulate their thoughts and ideas confidently and present themselves proudly without thinking they are boasting or being ‘too much’. Ultimately, to be unapologetically BOLD.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
Last year I took a gap year and travelled around three continents and over nine countries. It truly was the best year!

Event review:?Women's History Month: Negotiation Masterclass ?by?Oriade
We recently had our latest workshop, a Negotiation masterclass focusing on key skills and techniques of negotiation and debunking the myths that come with negotiating pay, whilst discussing the internal barriers that prevent women from going for the salary and benefits that they deserve.?
Did you know that 70% of managers actually?expect?a salary and benefits negotiation when making a job offer, compared to 34% of women that decide to take the risk?!!
As daunting as it may be, negotiation is a great skill to have. Luckily for us all, our founder?Mary ?was able to narrow this skill down to four steps:?Prepare, Practice, Discuss and Refine?which we enjoyed learning about over wine, chocolate and fruit at Mindspace in Shoreditch.
I learnt that next time a job offer or a similar opportunity arises, I will think about how best I can negotiate to get what I deserve (and maybe even a little more). Here’s to being audacious and going for the whole cake!
“Negotiation is as simple as asking for more. If you have the skills and talent, the company will find a way to pay you!”

‘Your career has a major effect on all the non-career hours as well. For those of us not already wealthy through past earnings, marriage, or inheritance, a career doubles as our means of support. The particulars of your career also often play a big role in determining where you live, how flexible your life is, the kinds of things you’re able to do in your free time..’ Long read from one of my favourite websites, Wait but why on ‘How to Pick a Career (That Actually Fits You)’, read it?here .

The Rose Review ?Progress Report on female founders?in the UK is one of my favourite recent reports. Some interesting stats include that in 2022 more women-led companies were founded than ever before, over 150,000 new companies and the biggest leap was among 16-25-year-old female founders.
If you also love statistics, can I dare to recommend the ONS, Office of National Statistics,?Statistically Speaking podcast. With episodes like ‘Health: The role of public data in taking the pulse of a nation ’ to ‘The R Word: Decoding ‘recession’ and looking beyond GDP ’, it is super interesting.
