Knock, Knock! Who's There? Your Next Job!

Knock, Knock! Who's There? Your Next Job!

Direct Approach: A Creative Job Search Strategy

Looking for a job can sometimes feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. But what if you could turn the tables and make the haystack come to you? Here's a job search idea that might just be the secret weapon you need: writing directly to potential employers, even if they're not currently advertising for staff.

Why Bother?

You might be thinking, "Why would I write to companies that aren't hiring?" Well, think of it as a mini marketing campaign. You're showcasing your skills and experience to a targeted audience, and sometimes, the right message at the right time can open doors you didn't even know existed.

The Game Plan

  1. Target Your Audience: Choose organizations based on location, industry, or the types of jobs they typically advertise. Aim for more than 20 companies to increase your chances.
  2. Personal Touch: Address your letter to a Line Manager or a Senior Manager who can influence hiring decisions. For example, if you're in IT, write to the Head of IT. For smaller companies, the Managing Director is your go-to person.
  3. Snail Mail vs. Email: While emails are easier and cheaper, snail mail can stand out in today's digital age. A well-crafted letter in an envelope might just catch the eye of a busy manager.
  4. Clear and Concise: Make it clear what you're seeking and highlight the benefits you bring as a potential employee. Mention both permanent and contract work to increase your chances.

Mr. Andrew Merriel Branch Manager BROADCAST PRESS Inc. PO Box 497 New York, NY

Dear Mr. Merriel,

Seeking a Contract or Permanent Assignment …where my unique Creative Experience could enable me to make a contribution to your business.

With a recent restructure at Kryptonite Services, I, along with several colleagues, have left the organization after 5 years of service. I am writing to you in my search for a Permanent (or Contract) position as I believe the skills and experience I possess would be relevant to your organization in areas such as:

  • Speed and Strength: Reacting to problem situations quickly and effectively.
  • Creative Problem Solving: Bringing a new dimension to your marketing department.
  • Creative Writing: Providing examples that have resulted in increased sales, benefiting your advertising department.
  • Travel Efficiency: As I can fly faster than a speeding bullet, my domestic and international travel expenses would be minimal.

If you have a current permanent vacancy or projects where my skills could add value in the short term, I would be keen to meet with you to explore those opportunities.

I have enclosed a one-page resume and would be happy to provide further details on request. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely, Clark Kent

Why This Works

Aside from the initial preparation, this kind of marketing campaign doesn't take much time. You can write to multiple employers with essentially the same letter, and it doesn't prevent you from contacting them later as part of a general networking program.

That's all for now… Have a super week! Phillip Powell

Very nice perspective on this brother, treating the hiring process as a Marketing Campaign will make them come to us which is a win itself, instead of us searching for them. Many companies also search for the right candidates with the right positioning and target market we are in the game!
