Knightsbridge, surrounded by Chelsea, Belgravia and South Kensington, is one of the most affluent areas in London. Home to Harrods, one of the most iconic department stores in the world- synonymous with luxury and opulence. But Knightsbridge was not always what we think of it as today. In fact the association of exclusivity and luxury only started to develop in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Thieves to fancy?

This suburb, once a place where assassination attempts and robberies frequently took place, has become one of the most affluent and sought after locations. Knightsbridge was once considered “no man's land” merely a location adjoining the river bridge between London and Kensington. It’s difficult to picture that Knightsbridge once suffered an identity crisis, as it were. Now it is home to foreign dignitaries, wealthy international families, five-star hotels, Michelin star restaurants?and designer boutiques.?

There are ample stories of how Knightsbridge came to get its name... Many of which have been discredited and it remains somewhat unclear which story holds the truth. Is it because of a large altercation between Knights ending in the Westbourne river or was it the frequent parade of heraldic knights heading towards the holy land on one particular bridge that gives us this name. This gives this London district an element of ambiguity, perhaps this intrigue is what draws people in, well, that and the retail therapy.

Sloane street, running north to south from Sloane square to Knightsbridge is renowned for its flagship designer stores including Saint Laurent, Gucci, Roberto Cavalli and Tom Ford.
