KMF's January in Review

Your gifts to KMF are changing lives!

Welcome to our January In Review Newsletter. The donations contributed to KMF in 2023 made a tangible difference in the lives of high-grade brain cancer patients and the doctors working to provide them with better treatment options. In January's newsletter, we’ll cover a summary of happenings from January, and break down the FOUR expense categories KMF funded for innovative research at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke in 2023.

Our Funding at Duke

The specificity of our mission at the Knox Martin Foundation—to fund innovative research—is very important. Despite being first identified in scientific literature in the 1920s, there are still only FOUR FDA-approved drugs to treat Glioblastoma. Glioblastoma is one of the most underfunded and under-researched cancers in the world.

Today, we are so proud to report that the grants KMF provided to the Duke Brain Tumor Center in 2023 covered expenses across four different categories to further innovative brain cancer research at Duke.

These tangible results are a true testament to the power of donations made to KMF. Whether our donors gave $10 or $10,000 last year, their funds were used to improve the lives of high-grade brain cancer patients desperately in need of hope, encouragement, and innovative treatment.?

Dr.

Here are the FOUR expense categories our innovative research grants funded at the Duke Brain Tumor Center in 2023:

1. Expenses of patients enrolling in KMF funded Clinical Trials:

  • 24 patients enrolled in the PESKE trial
  • 5 patients enrolled in the FLIRT trial

KMF helped 29 brain cancer patients receive innovative treatment at Duke in 2023! The generosity of our donors helped these patients (and future ones) look beyond the challenges of a devastating GBM diagnosis to our vision of a world where a GBM diagnosis is treatable and curable.

2.?Salaries for:

  • A regulatory coordinator
  • A research nurse
  • A clinical trial coordinator
  • A laboratory research technician
  • A laboratory postdoctoral scientist

Brain cancer research would be impossible to conduct without world-class medical and administrative staff. Our grants helped employ 5 highly qualified members of Dr. Khasraw's medical research team at Duke.?

3. Scientific abstract presentations:

  • 7 abstracts presented at national and international scientific conferences

Innovative research and clinical trial development require extensive collaboration. Our grants to Duke allowed Dr. Khasraw's medical research team to work with doctors from around the world, ensuring the research they’re conducting is effective, safe, and evidence-based.

4. Material:

  • Lab supplies (pipets, tubes, glassware, etc)
  • A Centrifuge
  • Tumor Tissue processing kits
  • Chemical reagents
  • Parking & lunch vouchers for patients

Our grants to Duke provided lab equipment, scientific material, and parking & lunch vouchers for patients involved with our clinical trials.
