Klarna's IPO, the state of startups and Amex M&A

?? Hi all! Welcome to another week of Fintech Stuff.

This week we have a new episode of Rex and Simon Talk Fintech on Klarna’s upcoming IPO,? as well as an interview with my friend Peter Walker, Head of Insights at Carta, who just published a 100+ page deck on “The State of Startups in 2024.”?

Carta manages cap tables for 40k companies, so we looked at their unrivaled dataset to draw insights on which sectors are hot, what cities are raising the most, the state of down rounds and more.

And then on RSTF, we dove into the news that Klarna is shifting up its IPO to as soon as early as the coming week at a valuation of $15B. Is this the ultimate comeback story? And what does this mean for other IPO candidates like Chime, Gusto, Navan and others??

The IPO window is opening. Below is a list of 39 fintech companies that are candidates.?

Amex is losing market share to companies like Ramp. So they bought an expense management company for $600M built by the founder of Concur and his son.

Remember that when you see headlines about lawsuits, there is often someone with an agenda and the media plays along.

The Amex/Center deal is a pretty fascinating acquisition. I’ve been generally unimpressed in the past by the integration of purchases like this by public market fintechs. It’s a large purchase price for a non-top 5 product in the space (imo) and then an even larger internal cost to integrate and refine the in-product customer experience with the new tech. I’ll be interested to see how and where Amex drives forward with their b2b product strategy in the next 9-12 mos after this. I think we’ll be able to fairly quickly tell how much ROI they’ll get from this.
