KitKat Exits Fairtrade

KitKat Exits Fairtrade

When I was 14-16 I boycotted Nestle for 2 years.

It was the first truly big stance i’d made in life, making a conscious effort to avoid all of their products.

I was surprised by just how many everyday products they own, and so I made sure that every weekly shop I went with my parents and checked every label before buying anything Nestle.

Why did I do this?

Well I had read the story of the Nestle Breastmilk scandal and when I saw the detail I was really outraged. If you aren’t aware then a quick Google search brings up the story.

Things changed slowly and the scandal came to a head, Hoorah I had done my bit and that felt good. I was one of the silent minority who stopped buying and didn’t tell the world about it, but I was doing what felt right and that felt good!

Today, I was surprised and saddened to read that once again Nestle are making the news with their KitKat brand. KitKat will stop using Fairtrade cocoa beans. Fairtrade is such a global force for good, to which Nestle contributes around £2,000,000 which affects around 27,000 small scale producers in developing countries.

Sadly it looks like KitKat is now off the menu for me until their decision is changed, and for those of you I have worked with, you will know that I have bought and given out thousands of them to my colleagues each week.

You should read the full story on this to form your own opinion. There will be people who think it’s a good thing, I respect your opinion and we can still be friends :)

Peter Boswell A very interesting post. I too remember the breastmilk scandal. I helped raise funding to highlight the scandal. Nestlé cannot easily erase the memory of that horror. We need to keep an eye on large corporations... Well done you for publicising this.
