Kitchener Line 50th Anniversary

Half a century never looked so slick!

As Metrolinx continues to connect communities across the region, we wanted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of our second-ever route, the Kitchener GO Line.

Launched in April 1974, ridership nearly doubled within a year, and it continues to grow to this day - with work underway to transform the line into a two-way all-day transit route.

Boring Excitement: A two-year journey to the finish line ends

Tunnel boring machine "Rexy" broke through the final wall after a two-year journey underground.

The TBM spent the last two years excavating the underground stretch between Renforth Drive and Scarlett Road, where the future Eglinton Crosstown West Extension will come to the surface and transition to an above-ground section.

This is one of two 6.3-kilometre tunnels that will bring more rapid transit to Toronto and Mississauga.

Expanding while Operating: The logistics of GO Expansion

Expanding on an existing transit network while maintaining operation with minimal headaches is a complex task at the best of times, but we're up for the challenge.

Over the last two years, significant work has been done to help the GO Expansion project reach closer to completion.

That includes electrification efforts, track-level improvements at Union Station and a new and improved fleet of vehicles.

But despite the sheer size and complexity of this unprecedented project, careful planning and design means construction can be expected to begin later this year.

Read more on how this work will bring faster, more frequent service to the busiest areas across our network.
