Kitchen Bath Sales Secret
Kirk Heiner

One of the most important discoveries you will ever make about selling kitchen and bath products or services is this.
In any profession there are 8 Essentials you must master to guarantee your success.
These 8 Essentials are unique and specific to each profession.
In other words, to ensure their success a Doctor needs to develop mastery in Human Anatomy, Prescribing Medications, Diagnosis of Disease and 5 other critical keys.
A bricklayer needs to master knowledge of masonry products, setting materials, use of tools, creating plumb and level lines, etc. What about the 8 Essentials of your trade?
If you sell anything in the kitchen and bath industry you too will need to master "your” profession’s 8 Essentials. So here’s the BIG question. What are they?
The truth is... nobody knows. (yet)
Our industry only focuses on 2 of the 8. What are those 2?
Design & Product Knowledge.
You absolutely need to develop mastery in designing a great solution for your clients. But that alone is not enough. You also must know your products inside and out. These 2 Essentials are absolutely foundational to selling in the kitchen and bath space. But what’s the obvious glaring question? You guessed it.
What are the other 6 Essentials?
Ask Yourself This Question
If you are only strong in 2 of the 8 Essentials do you think you’ll struggle? Of course.
Here are just 2 of the 8 Essentials our industry fails to focus on and teach.
Communication & Sales Skills.
Develop Mastery in these 2 Essentials and you're guaranteed to do better.
Do you think that mastery in communication and sales skills might help boost your career?
I think the answer is pretty clear. Reason with me here.
Can you imagine trying to be successful in selling kitchen and bath products or services and NOT having mastery in both Communication and Sales?
Again, the answer's pretty obvious.
The Problem
Here’s the hard truth. We don’t train our people in these two key components of their success. Then we wonder why they fail to hit their numbers. And that's only 4 of the 8 essentials.
Most people in the kitchen bath business have never read a single book on sales. 95% have never attended a sales seminar or sales training event.
Communication may actually be the more difficult skill to master. But why?
2 Reasons.
1) There's very little good information out there.
2) We think we're good enough.
I've been working on a book on Communication for the past 10 years and here's what I discovered.
There's very little good content on how to improve your communication skills. Much of it is old conflict resolution concepts from the 1980's. But what's worse is that most of us think we are Good Enough at it. Good enough seldom is.
We all think we're good enough. Think about it, you've been communicating since you were a baby. So why wouldn't you be good at it. Because you and I weren't taught to be great at it.
The truth is most people are mediocre at communication, not exceptional. How many people do you know that you'd rate a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10 in the area of Communication?
Zero? Or maybe one?
Add to that the concept of cognitive bias or Illusory Superiority.
It's a social psychological fact that most people see themselves as Better than Most People at almost everything. Most people believe they are smarter, luckier, better looking and better drivers than the majority. That can't be. The math doesn't work. Most of the people can't be better than most of the people.
It's the illusion of being better than we actually are. But the truth is that unless people regularly come up to you and say, "Wow, you're an amazing communicator". then you probably aren't one.
Every week I have Kitchen & Bath companies contact me and many say they’re doing everything they were trained to do, yet not getting good results. You have to ask why?
They aren't developing Mastery at Communication & Selling.
And Communication and Sales are just 2 of the other 6 Essentials nobody's talking about.
So what's the solution?

5 年Hey Kirk, great point. I don't work on Kitchen Bath sales directly, but I end up being involved on part of the process when I provide natural stone slabs. I think you stress a very good point, on self-indulgence and over-evaluation, I would surely enjoy hearing more of what you have to say on self-improvement and key skills. Let me know if you can forward some spoiler for the book. I'll surely keep an eye on more articles from you.?
