The King's Speech

I expected a lot of the King's Speech this year, as the new government sets out their plan for the year ahead. With an election won, this was our first chance to see what this Labour government intend to do with a firm mandate. For the charitable sector in particular, it was an opportunity to see what the governments priorities are and where we fit in.
There was a lot said, and a lot that wasn't said, but the choice of phrasing throughout felt very intentional. Specifically one of the opening lines "fairness and opportunity for all" set a tone that I'm sure we all hope will define their term in office.
To expand that a little more, in the context of our sector it represents a lot of potential for creating real positive change. Does this signal to us their openness to engage in conversation? Are they willing to work with us to create real lasting change? Will they support us to deconstruct the structures that underpin inequality and social exclusion in this country? Will they trust our knowledge and insight into the issues that matter to marginalised and underserved communities?
Time will tell. But as government departments now start to work through their priorities, here's me hoping that they use this historical mandate to support everyone in this country to access the opportunities that will enable them to thrive.
