-?Grosses over 40 million naira in its opening weekend
- On course to realize over 200 million naira
Lagos, Monday 11th April, 2022 - According to the weekend box office table published on the official website of the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), King of Thieves, a co-production of Euphoria 360 and Anthill Studios, distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, has opened with over 40 million naira at the box office, in its first three days. The film’s opening weekend takings make it the highest-grossing, displacing Hollywood’s leading films, Morbius and Sonic: The Hedgehog, in a better-than-expected Ramadan weekend. It has also achieved becoming the biggest opening for a Nollywood film in 2022.
King of Thieves is an epic drama, an usual genre at the Nigerian box office. It stars an A-list cast, including Toyin Abraham-Ajeyemi, Lateef Adedimeji, Femi Adebayo, Odunalade Adekola, and Kayode Olaiya, amongst others. Considering the positive word-of-mouth remarks and critique acclaim it is currently enjoying, box office analysts are forecasting that it could be Nollywood’s only third film to cross the 200-million-naira mark in the past two years, others being Omo Ghetto: The Saga and Christmas in Miami.
The success of the King of Thieves in cinemas is undoubtedly the beginning of great times for content that showcases core Nigerian culture, and its wide appreciation indicates the emergence of the epic flavor on popular platforms, both locally and internationally.
Worthy of note is the fact that the film is in Yoruba (95% original tongue) with an English subtitling, which places it as a major qualifier for several international film awards.
King of Thieves opened in cinemas on 8th April and is still showing across Nigeria.????
