King of Kindness

Our role as a leader is easy, to be kind and be accessible to anyone. We just need to put our ego aside and be extremely down to earth. Always keep the door open to everyone by maintaining an open door policy. I recalled of my ex-workplace where all the offices have no door including the GM's office.
As easy as it might sound, the fact is many leaders still failed in this aspect for many reasons. You have to agree with me that not many leaders are humble as you can imagine. A great example is to reflect on all the leaders in your current and past organizations. Which type of leaders you prefer to work with, the ego or humble?
I am pretty sure that everyone has the same answer here. A humble leader is normally kind in nature and is truly an amazing Boss that is hard to find and replace, difficult to part with and impossible to forget. Like Jack Ma quotes " A good boss is better than a good company" So you're lucky and should be grateful if you have a good boss.
This is the kind of leader who have mostly likely been through hardship from the bottom up to their current role. Otherwise, there is no way for the person to understand everyone's pain, sorrow and tears. Not sure about other industry, but in our industry everyone are equal and start from the bottom regardless whether you have a degree or not.
That is something that I always reiterate to all students during the school talk show and also to all the new hires during the on boarding day. The good news is people with paper qualification and experience start with a stronger grip, but the bad news is they start the same level as others. It's an industry that you have to learn from people and grow along with them.
Even you have achieved success to lead over the period of time never rest on the laurels! Walk the floor and talk to your people instead of hiding in your office. You need to go back to the root in order to get a better perspective of the operation. That way you can also offer your assistance or even kindness to the people who need most.
It's therefore imperative for a leader to have a service mindset and that is to be the king of kindness. Without this mindset you won't be able to hide your ego to be a great leader that people will follow naturally. So to everyone out there who are leading or transitioning to be a leader, I wish you all the best and remember to be kind.

4 年Kent Lee, MBA. Excellent article. "Service Mindset" is critical as leader to get people engaged & committed. However it is easier said than done. "Service Mindset" is NOT something Leaders can buy at McDonalds Can't be learned by Osmosis or by proximity (is not a virus) either It takes much more than reading a book or having a conversation about it. It will depends on leader's ability to go to mental detox first to unlearn outdated ways of thinking. Unlearning means: Acknowledging that a mental model no longer works, identifying a new one that does, and embedding it into their way of thinking Thank you for sharing
