The King has Horses Ears

The King has Horses Ears

When I was in school, one of the stories I still remember being told was this story.

What stories do you remember from your childhood and still have a deeper meaning for you?

The King with Horse's Ears

Once upon a time, in ancient Ireland, there was a king named Labhraí Loingseach (also known as King Lóegaire Lorc). Despite his regal stature and noble demeanor, King Labhraí had a peculiar secret: he possessed the ears of a horse. To keep this secret hidden from his subjects, he wore a large hat at all times and only allowed his barber to see him without it.

Each year, the king would hire a new barber, and after their service, he would have them executed to ensure they never revealed his secret. This continued for many years until one day, a young and skilled barber was selected to cut the king’s hair. The young barber was distraught, knowing that his fate was sealed once he saw the king’s ears.

However, the young barber’s mother, sensing her son's distress, pleaded with the king to spare her son’s life. Moved by her plea, the king agreed but on the condition that the barber must never reveal the secret. The barber, though relieved to be spared, was tormented by the burden of the secret and found it increasingly difficult to keep.

Eventually, the young barber sought advice from a wise druid, who suggested he find a way to release the burden of the secret without revealing it to another person. The druid advised the barber to go to a certain tree, make a hole in its trunk, and whisper the secret into the hole. The barber did as he was told, and the secret of the king’s horse ears was absorbed by the tree.

Time passed, and one day, a harp-maker cut down the very same tree to craft a harp. When the harp was played at the king’s court, it miraculously sang out the words, "The king has horse's ears!" Overwhelmed with shock and embarrassment, King Labhraí eventually accepted his condition. To his surprise, the people of his kingdom did not mock or shun him but rather accepted him as he was. The king, realising that his secret was no longer a burden, felt a great sense of relief and gratitude.

For me this story has a deeper meaning.

Authenticity

  1. Mental Health: Hiding your true self or living behind a fa?ade can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression. Authenticity fosters self-acceptance and mental well-being.
  2. Relationships: Genuine interactions build stronger and more meaningful relationships. When you are true to yourself, others can connect with you on a deeper level.
  3. Fulfillment: Living authentically allows you to pursue your true passions and interests, leading to a more fulfilling and satisfying life.

Avoiding the Burden of Secrets

  1. Stress Reduction: Keeping secrets, especially significant ones, can be a constant source of stress. This stress can have negative effects on both physical and mental health.
  2. Energy Conservation: Maintaining a secret requires significant emotional and mental energy. Letting go of secrets can free up this energy for more positive and productive endeavors.
  3. Authentic Connections: Transparency allows others to understand and support you better, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Importance of Therapy

  1. Self-Discovery: Therapy helps you explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, leading to greater self-awareness and understanding.
  2. Coping Mechanisms: A therapist can provide strategies to cope with stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges, enabling you to handle life's difficulties more effectively.
  3. Healing: Addressing past traumas and unresolved issues in therapy can lead to emotional healing and personal growth.
  4. Perspective: Therapists offer an objective viewpoint, helping you to see situations more clearly and make informed decisions.
  5. Support: Therapy provides a safe space to express yourself without judgment, offering consistent support and validation.

Being authentic reduces the burden of secrecy and promotes mental well-being, while therapy offers tools and support to understand and improve yourself. These elements are key to leading a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling life.
