When I was in the 7th grade my self-esteem had taken a beating. I felt about as tall as an ant that could easily crawl under a snake's belly.
That is until I met Brian Crouch.
Brian was my 7th grade social studies teacher. I remember the day I walked into his class. I don't remember a thing he said. To this day, over 40 years later, I remember how he made me feel, that day, and every day for that entire year. He saw me for who I was and who I could become. He saw the hero in me and did everything in his power to bring that hero to life in me and every other student in his class.
Brian Crouch is one of my kindness heroes.
When I was sixteen my parents had divorced and I'd moved to a new city, going from a high school of about 1000 students to one of nearly 4000. I didn't know anyone and, to be honest, I was nervous and scared.
Then I met Paul Larson. He was the choir director. I don't remember how it happened, but somehow I ended up in the concert choir. I don't remember anything that was said in that class. Well, okay, I still remember some of the songs we sang, but I don't remember anything else. To this day, however, I remember how Paul Larson made me feel. He saw me for who I was and who I could become. He saw the hero in me and went out of his way to bring that hero out.
Paul Larson is one of my kindness heroes.
That same year in my new high school, they did My Fair Lady for the musical. I really wanted to try out for it as I enjoyed singing and hamming it up in front of people. However, I needed to work to help my mom make ends meet following the divorce, so I didn't go to the auditions.
A month into the rehearsal's Paul Larson introduced my to Chris Brower, the drama teacher. One of the cast members that was in a minor role of a servant broke his leg and wouldn't be able to perform. Chris, on Paul's recommendation, asked if I'd be interested in the part. The show was supposed to open in two weeks (or something like that). I really wanted to do it so I got my mom's approval and cleared it with my boss at Little Caesar's and got the part.
The part was small, but I had an absolute blast. Being part of the cast was like being part of a large family. We had so much fun together.
After the play was over, Chris asked me if I'd consider coming into his drama class for the second semester. I said yes and had the time of my life that next semester. At Chris's recommendation I entered several competitions and did well.
I don't remember much of what was said in Chris's class. To this day, however, I remember how Chris Brower made me feel. He saw me for who I was and who I could become. He saw the hero in me and went out of his way to bring that hero out.
Chris Brower is one of my kindness heroes.
My list of kindness heroes is long. I could go on for hours. I'll stop here for now.
Kindness heroes. - Who needs them? All of us. Every day of our lives. We need them, and we need to be them.
Why?
Because we all need daily reminders of what it is to love an be loved, to feel valued and appreciated.
Kindness heroes do those sorts of things. They give away smiles. They share kind words in person, in texts, on the phone, on social media, and any other venue that comes there way. They give service, simple and great. They put the action into hero. The put love into hero.
