Lately, I’ve found myself observing a trend that’s both unsettling and disheartening. More and more, it seems as though people are moving through life like zombies – detached, self-absorbed, and seemingly unaware of the existence of others around them. The lack of consideration for fellow human beings is something we must address if we want to create a more harmonious world.
Recently, while traveling, I had an experience that highlighted this issue. As I boarded a shuttle bus to the baggage claim area at Denver International Airport, I watched as people pushed and shoved as soon as the doors opened, desperate to be the first on board. There was no regard for those who were still trying to exit the bus or for the fact that everyone had somewhere to go. I decided to wait patiently, respecting the space of others, only to be met with more shoving and impatience. It was a stark reminder of how disconnected we’ve become from each other.
This experience left me saddened, but also determined to bring awareness to the importance of kindness, consideration, and respect for one another. We are all connected, and it’s crucial that we remember this in our interactions with others.
In that moment of chaos, my boyfriend turned to me and said, “You’re going to need to start shoving and pushing, too.” But I refused. He insisted, “You’re too nice!” But I don’t want to be jaded into believing that I have to fight for my place in line. I choose to believe that we can all be considerate of one another, that we can move through life with more kindness and less aggression.
Interestingly, when I observe animals in nature, I often see more consideration and harmony than I do among humans. Animals understand the balance of give and take and the importance of coexistence. If only we could learn from them and apply those lessons to our own lives.
Another example of this disconnect is something many of us experience daily: driving. I try to maintain a safe distance behind the car in front of me, but that open space often becomes an invitation for others to cut in, disregarding the safety and space of others on the road. It’s another symptom of the “me first” mentality that has taken hold of so many.
What I hope to convey is this: We need to be more mindful of each other. We need to practice more compassion, more kindness, and more love. It’s time to stop acting as though we’re the only ones on this planet – because we’re not. We share this world with billions of others, and we owe it to each other to be more considerate and caring in our daily lives.
“I wish people would love everybody else the way they love me. It would be a better world.” – Muhammad Ali
Kindness isn’t a weakness; it’s a strength. It’s a conscious choice to see the humanity in others and to act with heart. I challenge you: the next time you find yourself in a situation where the instinct to push ahead or cut someone off arises, pause for a moment. Remember that we are all connected, so choose to lead with kindness instead.
