Kindness Above All Else

Kindness Above All Else

Being kind and practicing kindness is usually reserved in society for children. Raising "good" kids, telling them to "be kind" or "be nice" lasts until we get old enough to be responsible for our actions.

At a certain point in our lives, what we strive to be changes. We start to work towards success, financial stability, both mental and physical health. And, although being kind does in fact play a role in all of those, how often do we really stop and remember to be kind?

What does it mean to be kind?

Kindness and being kind may sound like a behavior, but it's really something deeper than that. Being kind is about living a life that revolves around helpfulness, thoughtfulness, positivity, generosity and consideration. Kindness is a way of living your day to day life. It is something that should be shared and given without expectation. Kindness is and should be free, positive, simple.

Things you probably don't know about being kind

Someone who is kind and uses all the traits we mentioned above is actually probably a happier person. Kindness releases endorphins in the brain and can actually help to reduct pain and stress. Studies have shown that kind people have 23% less stress hormone in their bodies and even age slower.

Being kind also:

  • helps you feel stronger and energized
  • lengthens your lifespan
  • lowers your blood pressure

Mister Rogers on being kind

One of the best example of living a life of kindness comes from our quote-giver this week, Mister Rogers. Mister Rogers - or Fred Rogers - was a television host, author and producer in American who lived from March 20, 1928 to February 27th 2003. His television show, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood ran from 1968 - 2001.

This television show focused on helping to teach children to be true to themselves, kind to others and how to understand the world around them. He wrote songs, used puppets, had guest stars and didn't shy away from tough conversations.

His beliefs revolved around kindness, inclusivity and being welcoming to others. These messages were especially meaningful because they were shared during the Vietnam War and after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended segregation while providing legal, civil and political rights and protections to African Americans.

Mister Rogers lead a life of kindness and, in return, we loved him.

Why we chose this quote

This week is the 20th anniversary of Mister Rogers' death. To honor him, we wanted to highlight this quote and its' message. Success can look like a lot of different things to different people. But being kind and the role kindness plays in success should not be overlooked.

Our challenge for you

This week, look for opportunities to be kind. Reflect on how you already practice kindness and recognize when you see people around you doing so, too.
