Kilometers for the Future

Kilometers for the Future

My name is Rodrigo Castillo, I am from Ocotal, a very small town in Nicaragua, but with a lot of history. When I was born the population in Ocotal was less than 20,000 people, but I grew up within a warm family, friends for life and nature.

I had the privilege to have opportunities of study, work and build an international career, that has given me enough to achieve many of my objectives. A few years back I dedicated some time to find my purpose in life, and one of the purposes that came out was to help and transform lives in the communities in need.

I truly believe, that if you transform a person’s life, that person can transform the world.

Even when I was privileged to have a family, a home and the opportunity to study, that is not the standard in the place I grew up, the poverty leves are high and education opportunities are just a dream for many kids in the region. So the place I grew up is the perfect place to start helping to give education for the ones today don’t have the opportunity.

The challenge

One of the passions in my life is triathlon, where you swim, bike and run, I started back in 2014 and it became a big part of my life, to the point I am now competing on IRONMANs (long distance triathlons), this is a 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42km run.

It is obvious to say that this is a big physical and mental challenge and just a few people complete one, given the magnitude of the challenge I have decided to match this with my purpose and raise money to help children in poor communities and create awareness of their situation.

I am scheduled to compete the next triathlon at the 2020 Ironman Cozumel on November 22nd, that will be the first event where we all have the opportunity to give and change the lives of many children.

The project

My vision of this is to get to a point where with your help build schools in places there are none or enough, give scholarships for students to go to college and improve their lives and all the environment around them.

But let’s start step by step, the money raised in this event will be used for:

  • Build another classroom in the Loma Fria School (Dipilto, Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua), currently they only have one class room where all the different grades attend, sometimes one grade in every corner. Goal: 3,000 USD
  • Give scholarship to as many possible students to attend university, the cost per student per year is:
  • University: 1,950 USD
  • High School: 1,030 USD
  • Primary School: 312 USD
